A friend just let me know he is looking at a 993 at a decent price (<30k apparently) in good condition, he is going to bring it to his 'Porsche guy' to have checked out, but it is auto with the selectable gears (I believe trip tronic was Porsches name). I know literally nothing about these trans. Are they just a slush box with a manual gear selection over ride or are they a sequential type gearbox? Reliability? I told him to man up and wait for a Manual but he is insisting this deal is too good to pass up on.

They're old school slush boxes with manual gear selection via a gate on the shifter, or steering wheel switches (not paddles).

993's are heading up in price, so sub 30 is nice. This is my favorite Porsche resource- they have a very good 993 forum:

My dad has a Boxter of that vintage, with the tripronic gearbox. He has never had any issues with it in the 60K miles he has put on it since new. Its no PDK but I always felt like the shifts were pretty decent; it's not slush box more or a sequential type. The buttons on the wheel are down right weird but you can shift with the lever also. They are not bad I guess.

<$30k for a tiptronic is about right for a 993. A stick sub-$30k would be a deal, but unless it's <$25k, it's probably not a screaming deal.
